Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS is estimated to affect ~20% of the population. People commonly report symptoms of pain, bloating, wind and altered bowel movements (e.g. diarrhoea and/or constipation). It is a functional disorder which means that there is no abnormality in the bowel, however, the symptoms can severely impact a person’s quality of life. IBS can be caused by different factors in different people but common triggers are: stress, diet and medications. Some people get IBS after a bout of gastro – known as post-infectious IBS.
If you have symptoms which you think might be IBS it is a good idea to see your GP. While there is no quick test to diagnose IBS, certain blood tests and scans can be useful to rule out other conditions (such as coeliac disease or Inflammatory Bowel Disease).
Depending on your symptoms, your triggers and your family history, your doctor may recommend you undergo some testing to check for other conditions before diagnosing IBS.
