Fibre, Prebiotics & Probiotics
It is well known fibre is good for the gut but did you know that there are different types of fibre? Some fibres help reduce our cholesterol level, others serve as good fuel source for our gut bacteria (prebiotics), and some are more important for preventing constipation.
Pre-biotics are foods which feed our gut bacteria. A diet low in pre-biotics can lead to an imbalance in gut bacteria which has been associated with various diseases.
Probiotics are bacteria (and other microorganisms) that are beneficial for our health. There are many different types found in various fermented foods and drinks (e.g. yoghurt, kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, kimchi) as well as supplements. Probiotics differ in their health benefits so it’s important to consider the right kind to suit your needs.
