Imagine you can’t attend an important social event because you are in doubled over with intense abdominal pain. Or you fall behind at work because you suffer from terrible migraines. You’re left wondering if it was last night’s dinner or the lunch you ate out yesterday? For people with food intolerance this frustration of not knowing the triggers of their symptoms and the resulting pain and disruption to their life has a massive impact on their quality of life.
Common symptoms of food intolerance are:
• Reflux, nausea, bloating, cramps/pain, wind, diarrhoea, constipation, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)
• Headaches or migraines
• Skin rashes, hives, itchy skin
• Mouth ulcers
• Mood swings, irritability, brain fog
If you’ve noticed that when your diet changes your symptoms change it is likely that you have some food sensitivities.
There are many tests for food intolerance being promoted but they have not proven to be useful in identifying food triggers. The gold standard is an elimination diet to reduce intake of likely triggers and reintroduce them to identify what you are sensitive to.
A note on Irritable Bowel Syndrome:
If you have symptoms which you think might be IBS it is a good idea to see your GP. While there is no quick test to diagnose IBS, certain blood tests and scans can be useful to rule out other conditions (such as coeliac disease or Inflammatory Bowel Disease). Depending on your symptoms, your triggers and your family history, your doctor may recommend you undergo some testing to check for other conditions before diagnosing IBS.
Identifying food triggers involves eliminating groups of foods based on common triggers and then reintroducing them into the diet to see if symptoms return. Sound scary? Well it shouldn’t…. with Phoebe guiding you through the process you will feel well supported in finding out what foods are safe and which you need to limit.
Phoebe is trained in common dietary approaches for managing food intolerances including the RPAH Elimination Diet and the Low FODMAP Diet.
